Acting EFCC chairman, Ibrahim Magu, has been dropped by president Buhari, weeks after the senate refused to confirm him as chairman of the anti-graft agency following allegation of graft levelled against him by the Department of State Security Service (DSS). According to reports, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has already issued a leter to Magu, asking him to hand over to the Director of Operations in the EFCC, pending when a new person is nominated to take over. There are also reports that he has been redeployed back to the Nigerian Police Force (NPF)..

President Buhari yesterday said the reason he was removed from office in 1985 was because he refused to take an advice from the IMF and the World Bank to devalue the Naira and increase prices of fuel and flour. He said this when he spoke at the Nigerian Army Guards Brigade Regimental Dinner. "I refused and gave my reasons and the next thing I knew I was removed and detained for three and half years. The world’s highest Beipanjiang Bridge, which is as high as a 200-story building, opened to the public on Thursday in southwest China’s Guizhou Province. It is the latest example of how Chinese engineering now ranks among the best worldwide. The 1,341-meter-long bridge soars 565 meters above the Beipanjiang Valley, with the famous Eiffel Tower measuring out to just over half of its height. It has also just overtaken the Sidu River Bridge in Hubei Province to become the world’s highest, according to Guizhou transportation officials.

72 year old, Idris Ajao, has been arrested by the Osun State police command for being in possession of a female human skull. Ajao who claims to be bricklayer, was arrested today while transporting the human part to Iwo. When interrogated, he said a herbalist by the name Tajudeen Jawesola, had asked him to exhume skulls from graves in a cemetery in return for N10,000. He was caught while exhuming one of the corpse buried in the cemetery. He blamed his act on the devil, saying it was a "big mistake" “It was Jawesola that asked me to get the human skull for him. Everybody knows Jawesola to be a herbalist and he wanted to use the human skull to do his work. He said he would give me N10, 000. I should not have listened to him. It is a mistake”he said

President Buhari today signed the Endangered Species Control Bill into law. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Sen. Ita Enang, made this known today in Abuja while briefing State House correspondents. Sen. Enang said the Act was one of the 10 bills forwarded to the president by the National Assembly, and that with the approval, President Buhari had completed work on all the bills sent to him for his consent. The Endangered Species Control bill is to discourage trafficking in endangered species and also to encourage the culture of the preservation of endangered species. Nigerians have been urged to join hands with the federal government to make corruption unattractive in the country according to Rt. Rev. David O.C. Onuoha. In his New Year message, Rev Onuoha ,who is the Bishop of Okigwe South stressed to need to reduce corruption in the country as it is crucial to the survival of the country. He urged Nigerians to rise above sectionalism, partisanship and tribalism while blaming successive administration ‘s recklessness for the current economic recession.

The population of Nigeria which was at 140,431,790 during the last population census in 2006 has been estimated to currently be at 193,392,517. This is according to the National Population Commission (NPC) and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). According to the forecast released by NBS, Kano is the city with the highest population of 13,076,892  people, followed by Lagos with 9,113,605 people. This report contradicts that given by the Lagos State Government and the United Nations which places the population of Lagos at 22 million people. Kaduna is estimated to be the third most populated state with 8,252,366 people, followed by Oyo state which has a population estimate of 7,840,864. Katsina has a population of 7,831,319 people, having been displaced by Oyo state to the fifth position. The NBS population analysis also estimated that  98,630,184 males and 94,762,333 females make up our entire population, with children between the ages of 0 - 4 making up the larger percentag

Russia has closed down an American British school run by America in Moscow, according to foreign media reports. Recent expulsions of 35 Russian diplomats from the Russian embassy in Washington were carried out as the US blames Russia for hacking and interfering in the US elections. However, Russia has vowed to react to this recent development, denying any hacking involvement and describing the US action as ‘ungrounded’.The recent Shutdown of the American school is one of those reactions. Previously, the US President Barack Obama had vowed to take action against Russia, when the US accused Russia of cyber-attacks on the Democratic Party and Hillary Clinton’s campaign. The police in Lagos state yesterday arraigned 21-year-old Cameroonian, Ledjou Kouemou, before an Ebute Metta Chief Magistrate Court for allegedly stabbing his boss and bride-to-be, Dayo Adeleke, to death at her residence in Parkview estate, Lagos on December 20th. Ledjou was arraigned on a one count charge of murder. The prosecuting counsel, Chinalu Uwadione told the court that the accused stabbed the deceased because she refused his request for a salary increase. He said the offence contravened Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011, which attracts death sentence. The Chief Magistrate, Oluyemisi Adelaja, ordered that he be remanded at the Ikoyi Prisons pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) and adjourned the case till February 24.

Authorities of the National Agency For Food and Drug Administration NAFDAC, yesterday addressed a joint press conference with officials of the Nigeria Customs Service NCS, where the final result on tests carried out on the "Plastic Rice" seized by some Customs officers in Lagos(read here), was released. According to the acting Director General of NAFDAC, Yetunde Oni, the bags of rice seized were not plastic rice but rice contaminated by microorganisms. Halle Berry and Olivier filed for divorce days within each other in October 2015 with each of them filing as the petitioner for the divorce. US President Obama on Thursday, accused Russia of hacking and interfering with the US presidential election on orders from President Vladimir Putin. Even though he had previously said, on several occasions, that he didn't think the election was rigged in any way. He ordered 35 Russian intelligence operatives to leave the country as part of sanctions ordered for what he said where the country's attempts to 'interfere with democratic governance' and harassment of U.S. diplomatic officials in Russia. In a statement he released while announcing the sanctions against Russia, he launched a scathing attack on Putin's Kremlin. He all but named Ptuin in his statement as the brain behind the hacking. The said the hacking was 'ordered at the highest level'. The 35 diplomats were given 72 hours to leave the US with their families. So they have till Sunday to leave. A High court sitting in Katsina State has sentenced 32 year old Mu’ammar Tukur, son of former House of Representatives member and District Head of Bakori, to death by hanging for culpable homicide. Tukur was dragged before the court for using a knife to stab one Shafir Muktar to death on April 21st 2008 during a fight between him and some other young men at a football viewing center. Delivering judgment in the case today, the presiding judge, Justice Abbas Bawale, said the argument put forward by the convict's counsel, AbdulAziz Olagoke, were unsustainable. Bawale ‎said that the accused went into hiding between 2008 and 2013 after committing the crime and was arrested at the grave yard during the funeral of his deceased mother. He added that Tukur's explanation that he was provoked to commit the crime was not satisfactory because he left the scene and came with the metallic instrument to commit the crime. This was gleaned from telecom industry statistics published on the website of Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) which showed that Globacom was the only network that recorded an increase in its internet subscriber base in the month of October, 2016.
