Naira Breaks 3 year Jinx, Gains 12% in 4 Days.

The value of the naira recorded the highest and fastest gain of 11.9 per cent in four days at the parallel market  in over three years last week as the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) sold a total of $372.4 million to ease the pressure on the local currency. Naira which rose to an all time high of N522 to the dollar last week Monday had gained N62 by the weekend to sell at N460 to the greenback. The apex bank had sold $370.9 million dollars on Tuesday and another $1.5 million on Thursday, sending the value of the naira up. Chief executive of Financial Derivatives Company Limited, Bismarck Rewane said he expects the CBN to commit itself to a regular and predictable supply of dollars to the forex spot market in March in furtherance to its forex sales last week.

FG Reviews Visa Processing For Business Travellers, Tourists To Nigeria

The Federal Government has reviewed the visa processes for foreigners who wish to visit Nigeria for business and tourism purposes, with a view to removing bureaucratic bottleneck and encouraging business travellers and tourists, thus giving a boost to the economy.In a statement issued in Lagos today, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the measures were part of the action plan for the ease of doing business as well as efforts to boost tourism, within the overall context of the Administration's economic diversification agenda. ''The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has reviewed the requirements for Nigerian visas to make them more customer friendly, and details of this review are available on the NIS official website, www.immigration.gov.ng.Types of visas currently reviewed include Visa on Arrival (VoA) processes, Business Visas, Tourist Visas and Transit Visas,'' he said.

Yusuf, has become an object of ridicule after he was caught naked in his student’s apartment. Nigerian Man AND Thai Woman Arrested For Reported Murder Case.

Police on Friday, February 24th, arrested a 33-year-old Nigerian man and a Thai woman in connection with a murder at Taman Puchong Prima, Malaysia Body of the victim, a Thai woman was found tied, gagged and covered with a blanket on a bed in the rental unit. The landlord discovered the dead body in one of the rooms he was renting out and alerted police at about 11.40am on Thursday.  She had been dead for about 24 to 48 hours. Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Seri Abdul Samah Mat said the case has been classified as murder, and the two suspects were arrested on Friday.

A Brazilian court has ruled that Brazilian football legend, Pele‘s son who was convicted of money laundering and drug trafficking, must begin serving nearly 13 years in prison. Edinho, whose full name is Edson Cholbi do Nascimento was originally sentenced to 33 years in 2014. But due to a lengthy appeals process, the 46-year-old did not serve the sentence until the new court ruling was handed down on Friday, February 24, 2017. The judge who presided over the case reduced the sentence to 12 years and 10 months.

The co-founder of Africa banking conglomerate, Atlas Mara Ltd. lost the case after the judge questioned his faithfulness in the divorce case which was filed in a London court. Judge Philip Moor who presided over the case ruled that the family assets belonged to Thakkar and not his mother and sister and thus ruled against him.

Naira Soars To 450/Dollar as Dollar Scarcity Fades Out.

The naira climbed to a three-month high at 450 against the United States dollar on the parallel market on Friday, as the scarcity of the greenback began to fade out on the official and black foreign exchange markets. Court Grants Seun Egbegbe N5M Bail.

The Federal High Court in Lagos has granted Nollywood producer, Seun Egbegbe and one Oyekan Ayomide N5 million bail. Both men have been in police custody since February 2nd for defrauding some Bureau De Change operatives at Gbagada in Lagos. Ruling on their bail application today, the presiding judge, Justice Oluremi Oguntoyinbo said they should be remanded in prison until they fulfill their bail conditions.

'7.1m People In Nigeria, 3 Other Countries At Risk Of Food Insecurity'.

The Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) has said Nigeria hunger crisis has deepened the spill over into Lake Chad Basin with about 7.1 million people now faced with food insecurity. In a statement to LEADERSHIP Weekend yesterday, it stated that the four countries affected are Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria. It further reveals that, “The UN foresees around 120 000 people facing famine conditions in Nigeria. Of this number, the vast majority – some 96 percent are expected to be in Borno. In Borno State alone, the population in crisis, emergency and catastrophe phases of food insecurity (Phases 3 to 5 on the five-tiered scale used by humanitarian agencies) increased from 2 million in August 2016 to 3.3 million in October-December 2016. The worst-affected in this group are not able to feed themselves and have exhausted all resources by selling off their belongings, including seeds, tools and animals. The Federal government has ordered the immediate sack of all directors in the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). The letter of their dismissal was issued from the Ministry of Transport. Confirming the dismissals to newsmen, the general manager of NCAA, Sam Adurugboye, said the reason for the sack was however not stated in the letter. “It is true that the directors have been disengaged but I don’t have details of the reasons given for the action by the ministry,” he said. NAIRA Exchanges At 500/Dollar At Parallel Market.

The Naira on Thursday consolidated its gains against the dollar at the parallel market, few days after the CBN announced a new forex policy. The Nigerian currency exchanged at N500 to a dollar after closing at N505 on Wednesday, while the Pound Sterling and the Euro closed at N600 and N510 respectively. At the Bureau De Change window, the Naira closed at N399 to a dollar, while the Pound Sterling and the Euro traded at N635 and N545, respectively. Trading at the interbank window saw the Naira closed at N305.50 to a dollar. Traders at the market said that the new forex policy by the CBN opening up dollar sales to commercial banks for school fees, medicals and Personal Travel Allowances was impacting the market positively. Solar Eclipse To Occur In Nigeria On Sunday- NASRDA

The National Space Research and Development Agency has said that there would be a partial Solar eclipse across the country on Feb. 26. The Head of Media and Corporate Communications, Dr Felix Ale, in a statement on Thursday said, “A partial solar eclipse will be visible all over the country with different degree of totality to occur on Sunday, February 26.” According to Ale, the highest degree of obscurity of 33 percent will be observed in the country during the natural occurrence in the southern part of Nigeria, particularly Port Harcourt, Uyo and Calabar. He said that the lowest degree of obscurity would be about nine percent in the northern part of Nigeria, particularly in Kebbi. Ale noted that in the South-West, the level of obscurity would be 23 per cent at about 5.42 p.m. and 6.30 p.m. He, however, said it would be recording 28 to 30 per cent between 4.45 p.m. and 6.33 p.m. in the South-East. “Meanwhile, the level of obscurity in Abuja, the Federal Capital Cit

A 22-year-old woman, Mrs. Christabel Itodo, has died of Lassa fever at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, in Calabar, Cross River State. Itodo, who is the wife of an army officer in Maiduguri, Borno State, was transferred from a hospital in Makurdi, Benue State, to the UCTH on Sunday. The Chief Medical Director of UCTH, Prof. Thomas Agan, who confirmed the death of the patient, on Thursday, said she died of Lassa fever. Agan said that the patient was first taken to the Army Clinic at the Eburutu Barracks in Calabar, where she spent four days and was later transferred to the Navy Hospital in Calabar, adding that her situation worsened before she was brought to the UCTH. He said, “Mrs. Christabel Itodo took ill in Benue State and was hospitalised there before they brought her to Calabar. In Calabar here, they took her to Eburutu Clinic where she spent four days. The National Association of Nigerian Students has given all South African companies in Nigeria 48 hours to relocate over the  xenophobic attacks on Nigerians  in South Africa. The students gave the ultimatum at a demonstration at some  South African companies  in Abuja on Thursday. During the protest the students carried placards and a banner, which read, “NANS Against Xenophobic Attacks on Nigerians.’’ The President of NANS, Mr. Kadiri Aruna, said in an interview with  News Agency of Nigeria  at the office of DStv, a South African company, in Wuse 2, Abuja, that Nigerian students had resolved to condemn the attacks. “We are saying that enough is enough as South Africans have openly attacked and bullied Nigerians.’’ Aruna said that the protest would also serve as a warning to other countries trying to underrate Nigerians.
